What are Interior Shutters?

Many people are unfamiliar with the term "interior shutters" and confuse these window treatments with others, such as exterior shutters and interior blinds. Sometimes, these shutters are even called plantation shutters, leaving people wondering what exactly are interior shutters. Dale's AAA Blind Factory interior design team is very familiar with interior shutters and is here to clear all the confusion.

What are Interior Shutters Compared to Exterior Shutters?

Exterior shutters are typically installed outside a home and are designed to enhance curb appeal; most are only for decorative purposes. They're made from wood, vinyl, or aluminum. On the other hand, interior shutters, as the name suggests, are installed inside of your home, directly on your window frames. However, they are made from similar materials to exterior shutters.

Interior shutters are designed to control light and privacy within your home with adjustable louvers that you tilt open or close. You can also layer them with other window treatments, like drapery, for a more luxurious appearance.

Interior Shutters vs. Interior Blinds

Horizontal blinds are window coverings with horizontal slats connected by a string ladder system. They are also made from wood, aluminum, or vinyl. When fully lowered, the slats form a solid barrier, providing privacy and blocking out light. You tilt the slats open or closed using a tilt wand or cord.

What are Interior Shutter Benefits?

Interior shutters control natural light and privacy for homeowners. When fully closed, the solid panels block the view from outside; they're well-suited for bedrooms, bathrooms, and street-facing windows.

The panels also act as a barrier against heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature, which can reduce energy bills. And since interior shutters aren't made from fabric-based materials, they can last longer than other window treatments.
